HeartbeatNow

The chance of survival is greatest when someone arrives on scene within six minutes, begins CPR, and connects an AED if necessary. HartslagNu is the emergency response system for citizen responders in the event of cardiac arrest (circulatory arrest). Read how it works and how you can register as a citizen responder or register your AED to save lives.

Register as a citizen responder at HartslagNu

As a citizen responder, you are registered with the HartslagNu resuscitation call system. In the event of a cardiac arrest (circulatory arrest) in your area, HartslagNu will send a call to your mobile phone asking you to start resuscitation or fetch the nearest AED.

Citizen assistance

As a citizen responder, you increase the survival rate of people experiencing cardiac arrest (circulatory arrest). You initiate resuscitation until professional help arrives. This allows you to help save lives!

Who can become a citizen responder?

Anyone who can perform CPR and is 18 years or older can register with HartslagNu. You can only register as a first responder if you have completed an accredited CPR course. It is important to take a refresher course annually.

How does the calling system work?

If a cardiac arrest (circulatory arrest) is reported in your area via 112, HartslagNu automatically alerts citizen responders near the victim. You'll receive a notification on your mobile phone. The message includes the victim's location and asks you to go immediately to the victim to perform CPR or retrieve an AED first.

Several citizen responders in the victim's vicinity will receive the call. This increases the likelihood that you will assist the victim together. It's recommended that you respond to the call if you can, but it's not mandatory.

Until when will citizen responders continue with resuscitation?

Citizen responders will perform CPR on the victim until paramedics take over. Once the paramedics indicate that your assistance is no longer required, you can leave. Paramedics have advanced equipment that increases the victim's chance of survival.

After resuscitation

Performing CPR is an emotional and powerful experience. You offer help in the hope that the victim will survive. But sometimes, unfortunately, resuscitation doesn't go well. It's crucial to talk about your experiences. You can do this with family, friends, and colleagues, but also with other volunteer responders or people who were present during the resuscitation. Who can you turn to?

Complete the HartslagNu online questionnaire after a resuscitation call

After a resuscitation call, HartslagNu will send you an online questionnaire that you can complete (up to 72 hours after the call). You can indicate on this questionnaire whether you require aftercare. If you do, they will contact you within 24 hours.
